Whole-Home Softener, explained
Hardness is mostly calcium and magnesium. A softener traps those minerals on resin beads and trades them for a small amount of sodium. When the beads fill up, the valve rinses them with salt water overnight and starts fresh.
Public water is disinfected with chlorine or chloramine, which is good for safety but harsh on taste and skin. The carbon layer removes it after it has done its job.
